Alkali Barium Glasses

Alkali barium is a soft glass that is excellent for glass-to-metal sealing. Alkali barium glasses are often used in matched glass-to-metal seals that are accommodating to small pin or thin casing designs. Alkali barium glasses can also be used in unmatched compression seals where resistance to thermal and mechanical stresses is needed. Alkali barium glass is commonly sealed with stainless alloy headers and Alloy 52 pins. Alkali barium seal components can be manufactured in a variety of ways to withstand extreme temperatures, pressures, and other environmental conditions. The most widely recognized alkali barium glass is Corning 9013.

Many industries utilize alkali barium glasses, including automotive, aerospace, defense, and space applications. While some glass manufacturers offer low lead compositions, the Elan 13 composition does not contain any lead, so it is commonly utilized in the European market to meet RoHS compliance requirements.
